Social Bookmarking is way for individual users to store, organize, manage and search all of their own bookmarks and share them with users all over the internet. As a user gathers bookmarks, they can organize them through the use of tags and lists. Tags are specific words which are associated to each bookmark which allow users to easily search your collection for information which is relevant to their interests. Lists allow the owner to sort their bookmarks into groups which contain relevant information. For example, a teacher finds a wonderful site with directions for the basic use of Audacity. They decide to put this site on their Diigo account to share with their colleagues. They log into their Diigo account and begin adding the website's address to their bookmarks. They give it the title "How to Use Audacity", copy and paste the website's address, add the tags "audio", "podcasting" and "recording" and finally, place it in their "Podcasting" folder. The use of the tags and lists allows both the bookmarks owner and other users to easily access the information.
Social bookmarking becomes effective in the classroom and in school in general by allowing students and teachers to share information they have discovered on the internet. For example, an 8th grade science teacher finds a wonderful site with lesson plans for a cross-curriculum project based on volcanoes. They save this site to their Diigo and share it with the school's art teacher and the 8th grade social studies teacher. The art teacher is able to access the same lesson plans and begins to plan a project where the students would create active volcanoes in art class. They find more links which go into detail on how to construct these volcanoes. The social studies teacher collaborates by timing their unit on the Pacific's Ring of Fire and uses their Diigo account to create a set of links with information the students can use as a reference for their report on the Ring of Fire. This allows each teacher to use their class time to cover different aspects of volcanoes and be able to give the students a well around education pertaining to this topic. Each teacher is able to share information about what concepts they will be covering in their classes and are able to share this information with the students if they so desire. It is this sharing which makes social bookmarking a powerful tool in the classroom.
